Changing the MX Record

Changing the MX Record

MX Records are used by mail servers to route incoming mail. You can redirect email to a remote server by changing your MX record. This can be useful for temporarily ensuring the function of email accounts when the local mail server is down.

To point the MX record to another domain:

  1. In cPanel, click "MX Entry"
  2. Choose the domain from the list
  3. Choose "Automatically Detect Configuration"
  4. Under "Add New Record", enter the destination address (for example, mail.alternativeserver.com).
  5. Click "Add New Record".

To point it to another server using the same domain:

  1. In cPanel, click "MX Entry"
  2. Choose the domain from the list
  3. Choose "Automatically Detect Configuration"
  4. Under "Add New Record", enter the destination address
  5. Click "Add New Record"
  6. Go to cPanel home and click "Simple DNS Editor"
  7. Choose the same domain from the dropdown menu
  8. Under "Add an A Record" enter the destination address you used in step 4
  9. Enter the server's IP address in the "Address" field
  10. Click "Add a Record"
