Optimizing your scripts can keep your server and website loading quickly for your visitors. These tips will help your WordPress install run as smoothly as possible.

  • Keep WordPress updated! As with any script, keeping up with updates will be beneficial for performance as well as security.
  • Watch and maintain plugins. If any plugins are causing high CPU loads, you should disable them. If you're no longer using a plugin, delete it.
  • Themes. Check to ensure that your preferred theme does not cause errors when you load a page. If you're getting page errors in the log, try a different theme to see if the problem persists. Disable dynamic image resizing unless it's necessary.
  • Cron Jobs. Don't set up cron jobs to run around the same time as each other. Space cron jobs out so that they have time to run and complete before another task is started.
  • Install WP Fastest Cache. These plugins are available in the WordPress Dashboard.
  • Spam Management. The Akismet plugin and CAPTCHA plugin are both useful tools to prevent spam bots from leaving comment spam.
  • Limit WebCrawlers and Bots. If you create Google and Bing Webmaster accounts you'll be able to adjust the frequency of webcrawlers caching your site. Another tool is a robots.txt file, which you can use to control webcrawler activity as well.
