Running Traceroute & Ping From Your Desktop


You can open the command prompt in earlier versions of Windows by clicking the Start button, then "Run", and typing in "cmd" and hitting Enter. In Windows 8, click the start button, then start typing "command prompt" and click it when it appears.

  • ping -From the command prompt, enter "ping" where is replaced by your actual domain name.
  • traceroute -From the command prompt, enter "traceroute" where is replaced by your actual domain name.


You can open the "Network Utility" on your Mac by navigating to Applications, then Utilities.

  1. Select the "Ping" or "Traceroute" tab.
  2. Enter the hostname, domain name, or IP address of your server.
  3. Click "Ping" or "Trace".
