You may want to change the location of your WordPress blog after you have installed it. For example, you might decide to move your WP install from blog.yourdomain.com to yourdomain.com, or yourdomain.com to yourdomain.com/journal. This quick guide will show you the easy step-by-step process of moving your blog to another location.
- If you will be moving your blog to a directory other than the main directory (yourdomain.com), you will need to create the directory using cPanel's File Manager. If you want to use a subdomain (subdomain.yourdomain.com, blog.yourdomain.com, etc) you will need to create the subdomain in cPanel.
- Log in to your WordPress administrative control panel. Click Settings, then General.
- Find the field labeled "WordPress Address (URL)" and change the address to the new location.
- Find the field labeled "Site Address (URL)" and change the address to the new location.
- Click "Save Changes". Do not proceed to step 6 until steps 1-5 are completed. It is crucial that you follow the order in this guide!
- Move the WordPress Core Files (including the subdirectories) to the new directory,
- Test your site by loading yourdomain.com/wp-login.php and logging in.
- Update your Permalink structure, if you were using Permalinks already.
- Verify that file permissions are correct. "0000" permissions should be changed to "0644".
- If you are using menus, you might need to update them in the Appearance control panel.
- Previously uploaded media and links in your posts will be pointed at the old file structure. This can be done manually in the database, or you can use a plugin such as Velvet Blues Update URLs.
